Most commonly used materials in mining
Nitrile (NBR) is the most common due to its good oil resistance and affordable cost. It is suitable for standard applications where temperatures do not exceed 100°C. Polyurethane (PU) offers superior resistance to mechanical wear and is used where higher friction or repetitive motion occurs. Fluoroelastomer (FKM or Viton) withstands high temperatures and aggressive chemicals, hence it appears in circuits with specialty fluids or in corrosive environments.
Selecting the wrong material does not always cause immediate failure. Sometimes the seal functions for a time but deteriorates earlier than expected, causing hard-to-detect micro-leaks and ultimately damaging other system components. Therefore, correct specification matters from the outset.
