The HLX5T rotation shaft transmits the gearbox output torque to the shank adapter through its splined interfaces. In Czech underground production drilling at OKD's Lazy hard-coal mine in Ostrava-Karviná—where the HLX5T drills sublevel caving fans through alternating coal seam and hard siltstone strata—the rotation shaft's efficiency determines how much of the hydraulic rotation motor's output torque reaches the bit face. A shaft with 15% frictional loss at the spline interfaces delivers only 85% of the motor's torque to the drill string; in coal formation where torque demand is low, that loss is invisible. In siltstone interlayers at 80–100 MPa where the torque demand approaches the motor's rated output, a 15% frictional loss may produce the 3–5 Nm deficit that causes the rotation to stall at the hard zone.
Rotation shaft efficiency degrades through two mechanisms in OKD's Lazy coal mine application. The first is spline surface wear from the combined torque and percussion load cycling—the same impact-load fretting mechanism that affects drivers in other applications, but acting on the shaft's spline connection to the gearbox output. The second is coal dust contamination of the shank lubrication circuit that reduces the oil film quality at the spline contact faces over 100–150 operating hours between lubrication circuit services.

OKD Lazy's HLX5T maintenance team added shaft spline lubrication circuit cleaning to the 200-hour minor service after identifying coal dust orifice blockage as the primary cause of early shaft spline wear. The clean-and-inspect procedure takes 25 minutes and has extended average rotation shaft life from 800 to 1,200 hours at the site. HOVOO supplies HLX5T rotation shafts and spline lubrication circuit service kits for Czech coal production drilling. References at hovooseal.com.
