The hydraulic pump oil seal is a small component with an outsized responsibility. Positioned at the shaft exit point of every hydraulic pump, it prevents fluid from escaping along the rotating shaft while simultaneously keeping contaminants from entering the housing. When it fails, the consequences range from annoying puddles to catastrophic bearing failure.
Types of Oil Seals Used in Hydraulic Pumps
Radial lip seals are the most common. A flexible lip — typically NBR, FKM, or PTFE — rides against the shaft surface with light radial pressure. A garter spring maintains this contact as the lip wears. Dust lips are often added as a secondary barrier against ingress.
Labyrinth seals appear in high-speed applications where contact friction would generate too much heat. They rely on tortuous flow paths rather than direct contact, making them virtually wear-free but less tolerant of pressure differentials.
Mechanical face seals (also called floating seals or duo-cone seals) are used in extremely contaminated environments — underground mining equipment, for instance. Two lapped metal rings pressed together by elastomeric toric rings create a metal-to-metal sealing face.
Signs of Oil Seal Failure
A darkening ring of hydraulic fluid around the shaft, suction-side air ingestion causing pump cavitation noise, and steadily declining system efficiency are all indicators that the shaft seal is compromised. Addressing this early prevents shaft scoring, which transforms a simple seal replacement into an expensive rebuild.

Replacement Guidance
Measure shaft diameter and housing bore carefully. A seal that is even slightly undersized will allow bypass; oversized seals can fold during installation, negating their function entirely. Lightly coat the seal OD with sealant and the lip with clean hydraulic fluid before pressing home.
HOVOO / HOUFU supplies hydraulic pump oil seals compatible with Rexroth, Eaton Vickers, Bosch, and other major manufacturers. Our range covers shaft diameters from 16 mm to 150 mm with operating temperatures from -40°C to +150°C. Find your specification at hovooseal.com.
