High-Load Roller Bearing of Atlas Copco RD22U in Canada

Canada's gold and copper mining spans contrasting geologies that impose contrasting demands on the RD22U's roller bearing. At Agnico Eagle's Meadowbank gold mine in Nunavut—where the Archean metasediment host rock runs 160–200 MPa UCS—rotation torque is high, bearing radial loads are elevated, and the short Arctic summer means the entire annual drilling program runs in less than eight months. At Nutrien's potash mines in Saskatchewan, the rock is soft but the brine chemistry attacks bearings through corrosion-fatigue rather than mechanical overload. The roller bearing's job description changes between these two contexts, but the physical component doesn't: the same bearing must perform reliably under both hard-rock mechanical loading and brine-environment chemical attack, depending on which Canadian province it ends up in.

The RD22U's roller bearing in the rotation motor carries higher combined loads than the RD18U equivalent—the heavier drifter class generates more rotation torque and transmits higher percussion-frequency vibration into the motor housing. In Meadowbank's Archean rock, peak bearing radial load during full-percussion hard-rock drilling can reach 2.5–3× the bearing's static load rating. In Nutrien's brine, the load is modest but chloride ions in the shank lubrication circuit (from brine spray entering the housing) attack the chrome steel raceway through a pitting corrosion mechanism that initiates fatigue spalling at lower stress cycles than the rated fatigue life assumes.

Canadian operations have found that a single bearing specification doesn't optimize across all Canadian site types. Meadowbank uses C3 clearance heavy-duty rollers to handle the high radial loads; Nutrien uses DLC-coated rollers to resist corrosion-fatigue; Ontario underground operations use sealed-and-greased bearings to exclude water. HOVOO supplies RD22U roller bearings in all three configurations for Canadian mining conditions. Full specifications at hovooseal.com.
