What a Tunnel Actually Demands from a Breaker

Underground environments pose hazards like oxygen-deficient atmospheres, crystalline silica dust, and extreme vibration from equipment. Those three hazards — air quality, dust, vibration — sit at the core of every tool selection decision in tunnel construction, and they pull in directions that a standard surface breaker is not designed to manage. In a surface quarry, dust drifts away; in a tunnel heading, it stays. Vibration on an open site rattles the excavator; underground, it reverberates off the lining, the crown, and every worker within fifty metres.

The work itself is also different in kind. Scaling — the removal of insecure blocks of rock from the back, the sidewalls, and the face — is carried out continuously after each excavation round. It is regarded as preparation for shotcrete and rock bolts, and due to its danger, the safety of workers must be carefully considered. Wall and roof profiling demands a tool that can work at awkward angles, in tight clearances, and often while pointing upward or sideways. A breaker sized for a 30-tonne surface excavator, however capable on a quarry bench, simply cannot be threaded into a 5-metre heading on a 3-tonne carrier.

How the SB 202 T Addresses Each of Those Constraints

The SB tunnel version is perfectly adopted for scaling, wall & roof profiling and other tough underground jobs. That narrow scope is not a marketing limitation — it reflects a series of engineering decisions that compound into real-world advantages underground.

Dust is addressed at the tool interface. The special tool together with the front shield & dust cover minimises dust intake into the percussion mechanism. Separately, a stainless steel piston offers superior durability and corrosion resistance for harsh working environments, where moisture from groundwater seepage and ventilation condensation would accelerate internal wear in a standard unit. An integrated water suppression system reduces dust emissions, improves visibility, and helps create a safer, cleaner workspace — directly relevant under OSHA's silica dust exposure rules, which apply underground as stringently as anywhere else.

Vibration and overload are handled by two independent systems. The integrated pressure relief valve protects against overloads — a particular risk in tunnel work, where the carrier and breaker are often positioned against irregular rock faces at non-vertical angles, creating uneven load spikes the operator cannot always anticipate. Energy recovery automatically uses the piston recoil energy to reduce vibration levels and improve performance: less structure-borne vibration reaching the boom means less fatigue on a carrier that may be running continuous shifts in a single confined heading. The Solid Body Concept — the one-piece housing — reduces the number of components, enhancing durability and minimising maintenance requirements in an environment where access for service work is genuinely difficult.

The floating guide bush keeps the tool accurately centred on each strike even when the carrier arm flexes from an awkward working angle. In surface demolition that is a convenience; in a tunnel, where the tolerance between a precise profile cut and an overbreak that requires remediation is measured in centimetres, it matters to the whole project schedule.

Fitting the SB 202 T into Your Tunnel Programme

The SB202 is part of Epiroc's tunnel configuration series, which also includes the SB 302, SB 452, and SB 552 — all designed for high reliability and maximum efficiency in tunnelling and mining projects. The four models step up in carrier weight and impact energy, so if your heading requires a machine larger than 6 tonnes, the 302 or 452 may be the right step up while keeping the same tunnel-specific feature set: dust protection, water suppression, front shield, and pressure relief.

Before mobilisation, confirm that your carrier's auxiliary circuit can deliver 35–65 l/min at 100–150 bar. The 17 kW hydraulic input ceiling is deliberately modest — it keeps fuel draw low in a confined space where ventilation is the binding constraint. Running a higher-powered surface breaker off the same carrier would push oil temperature up faster than the ventilation can compensate, shortening seal life and creating an overheating risk that is far harder to manage underground than on an open site.

Maintenance intervals underground follow a stricter clock than on surface. Inspect the front shield and dust cover every shift — rock flour and moisture combine into an abrasive paste that accelerates bushing wear faster than dry surface dust. The pressure relief valve and floating guide bush are maintenance-free by design, but the tool holder and stop pins should be checked each time the chisel is rotated. Keep a spare seal kit and a replacement tool on-site: in a tunnel heading with a tight cycle time, a two-hour part wait costs a full excavation round.
