Danfoss Pump Motor Units: Energy-Saving & Reliable Integrated Hydraulic Drive

A pump motor unit — sometimes called an electro-hydraulic actuator or a power unit — combines an electric motor and a hydraulic pump into a single integrated assembly. The concept is not new. What has changed is the level of integration: modern pump motor units from Danfoss pair servo or frequency-controlled motors with matched hydraulic pumps under coordinated digital control, producing a system with performance characteristics that a separately sourced motor and pump cannot replicate.

The Integration Advantage

When a pump and motor are designed and controlled together, the motor speed can be adjusted in real time to match hydraulic demand. During low-load phases the motor slows; during peak demand it speeds up. No bypass valve, no throttling, no heat generated by excess flow. In applications with variable duty cycles — which describes most real machines — this demand-tracking reduces input energy consumption by 40 to 60% compared to fixed-speed motor pump combinations running conventional circuits.

The reliability case for integrated pump motor units is equally straightforward. A single supplier is responsible for the mechanical interface, the electrical interface, and the control interface. Dimensional mismatches between motor shaft and pump coupling, vibration resonance from mismatched inertia, and control interaction problems between separately sourced drives and pump controllers — all of these go away when the unit is designed as a system.

Low Emission Performance

In mobile equipment, reducing hydraulic system power demand directly reduces engine load, which reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Danfoss pump motor units are increasingly specified in hybrid and electric mobile machinery where the hydraulic system must operate efficiently on a limited energy budget. The low emission positioning of these units is not incidental to their efficiency — it is the same thing measured differently.

Seal Maintenance in Integrated Units

The pump section of a pump motor unit requires the same seal maintenance as a standalone pump. In integrated assemblies, seal degradation is sometimes overlooked because the external leakage is contained within the unit housing and not immediately visible. Internal leakage from worn seals degrades volumetric efficiency and increases motor load — working against the energy-saving purpose of the unit.

HOVOO / HOUFU supplies hydraulic pump seal kits for Danfoss pump motor unit configurations. HOUFU-branded seals are verified for Danfoss pump dimensions and available for scheduled replacement to maintain peak efficiency. Find your kit at hovooseal.com.
