How Do You Measure Rock Drill Seal Dimensions to Avoid Ordering the Wrong Size?

The single most expensive measurement mistake in seal ordering isn't measuring the wrong dimension — it's measuring the installed seal rather than the groove. An installed seal is compressed; its cross-section and inner diameter are both smaller than the free-state dimensions specified in the catalog. A technician who measures a removed seal with a caliper and uses that number to order a replacement will order a seal that's 8–12% undersized, which will under-compress in the groove and allow bypass within 30–50 hours.

Measure the groove, not the seal. For O-rings: measure the groove width with a calibrated micrometer to determine the cross-section specification, then measure the groove bore diameter to determine the inner diameter. Apply the ISO 3601 compression ratio (typically 10–25% depending on static or dynamic application) to back-calculate the free-state cross-section you need. For lip seals: measure the housing bore with an inside micrometer to ±0.01 mm — that's the critical dimension. Lip seal OD is manufactured to a press-fit against the housing bore; a 0.2 mm undersized lip seal OD won't retain in the housing under percussion pressure.

Measurement Procedure by Seal Type

Seal Type

Critical Measurement

Tool Required

Specification to Order From

O-ring (static face seal)

Groove width and groove bore diameter

Outside micrometer 0.001mm; inside bore gauge 0.005mm

Groove bore diameter = O-ring ID; groove width × 1.3 = free-state cross-section

O-ring (dynamic radial)

Shaft OD (for shaft seals) or bore ID (for bore seals)

Calibrated shaft micrometer or inside micrometer

ISO 3601 table: ID tolerance ±0.5% of nominal; cross-section ±0.08 mm

Lip seal (percussion bore)

Bore housing ID and rod/shaft OD

Bore gauge, shaft micrometer — both ±0.01 mm resolution

Housing ID = seal OD (press fit 0.10–0.15 mm); rod OD = seal ID

Backup ring

O-ring groove width and adjacent gap dimension

Depth micrometer for gap; feeler gauge for clearance

Backup ring width = groove width minus O-ring cross-section; gap clearance below 0.08 mm

Wiper seal

Rod OD and housing bore at wiper position

Shaft micrometer and bore gauge

Wiper ID = rod OD − 0.3 to 0.5 mm interference; housing bore = wiper OD press fit

The measurement step takes 12–15 minutes per seal position. It eliminates the 2–4 hour teardown that results from installing the wrong size. Keeping a measurement log per machine per service creates a dimensional trend record that identifies bore wear before the seal fails. HOVOO provides groove dimension reference sheets for major drifter platforms on request, mapped against current OEM dimensional standards. Full references at hovooseal.com.
