Glyd Ring:Smart Design and Real-World Use in High-Performance Hydraulic Seals

Mar.29.2026

We all work in tech.

In today's hydraulic systems, the seal decides how well the whole thing runs, how reliable it is,and how long it lasts.Among all the seal choices, the Glyd Ring stands out as one of the top picks for piston seals in medium-to high-pressure and fast-moving jobs.

1.Structure:Perfect Teamwork Between Soft and Hard Parts

The Glyd Ring is a combined seal.It is not made from just one material. It has two main pieces:

·A PTFE square or rectangle ring that does the actual sealing and wears well.

·A rubber O-ring(usually NBR or FKM)that sits in a groove inside the PTFE ring.

The PTFE ring has a very low friction surface, resists chemicals, and works over a wide temperature range. Its flat shape gives a steady sealing face.

The rubber O-ring is not the main seal.It acts like a spring that never gets tired. It pushes the PTFE ring gently but firmly against the metal surface. This keeps a good seal even when there is no pressure or only low pressure in the system.

This“soft plus hard”setup fixes the problems of normal rubber seals (too much friction and easy to squeeze out)and plain PTFE seals(not elastic enough at the start).

2.How It Works:Pressure Makes the Seal Tighter

The Glyd Ring seals in two steps:

First, when the system is off or at low pressure:

The O-ring is slightly squeezed and pushes the PTFE ring against the surface. This stops leaks when nothing is moving.

Second, when the system starts and pressure rises:

The pressure pushes on the O-ring.The O-ring stretches more and acts like a pressure

booster. It sends the system pressure evenly to the PTFE ring. The higher the pressure, the tighter the PTFE ring presses against the surface. So the seal gets stronger exactly when you need it most.

3.Two Types and How to Install Them

There are two main types, depending on where they go:

·Hole-type Glyd Ring(for pistons):

Seals between the piston and the cylinder wall. The PTFE ring seals on the outside, and the O-ring pushes inward.

·Shaft-type Glyd Ring(for piston rods):

Seals around the rod to stop oil from leaking out.The PTFE ring seals on the inside, and the O-ring pushes outward.

The working principle is exactly the same for both. You just have to pick the right one and install it the correct way.Use special tools and guide sleeves so the sharp edges do not scratch the seal or the metal during fitting.

4.Great Performance and Key Numbers

Because of its design, the Glyd Ring gives these advantages:

·Extremely low friction and no stick-slip:

The PTFE surface cuts starting and running resistance. The cylinder moves smoothly even at very slow speeds,so control is precise.

·Handles high pressure well:

The combined structure stops the PTFE from being squeezed into the gap.It works from O to 40 MPa-enough for almost all factory hydraulic systems.

·Works with many fluids and temperatures:

Fluids:mineral hydraulic oil,water-glycol,HFA/HFB emulsions,even air and water.

Temperature:With NBR O-ring→-35℃ to +120℃ .

With FKM O-ring→-20C to +200℃(better for hot or harsh chemicals).

·Fast back-and-forth movement:

Low friction and good wear resistance let it handle speeds up to 5m/s.

·Long life and high reliability:

PTFE wears slowly, the O-ring is protected, so the whole seal lasts much longer than old-style seals. Less maintenance and fewer shutdowns.

5. Where It Is Used and How to Choose It

You see Glyd Rings in tough jobs like injection molding machines, construction equipment (excavators, cranes),machine tools, steel mill equipment, marine hydraulics, and

aerospace actuators.

When picking and using them, remember these points:

·Match the material:Choose NBR or FKM O-ring based on the fluid and temperature.

·Surface finish:The metal that touches the seal should be smooth (Ra 0.2-0.8μm)and hard enough.

·Gap control:Keep the right clearance between piston and cylinder or rod and guide bush-it changes with pressure to stop extrusion.

·Lubrication:Even though friction is low,a little system oil helps it last even longer.

The Glyd Ring is a classic, smart design in hydraulic sealing. It mixes two materials in a clever way so they help each other. It solves the old problems of high pressure, high speed, low friction, and long life all at once. For designers and maintenance people, understanding how it works and where its limits are is one of the most important things to keep the hydraulic system stable, efficient, and reliable.
